UBE ONITSHA PROJECT
(Basic education for everyone)
and DON BOSCO SECONDARY SCHOOL
(Don Bosco Training Centre restructuring)

Education is one of the most important right of the human being. It is also the instrument for the social and the civil development in a country. Illiteracy is a big obstacle for the progress and for the democracy. This cause poverty, exploitation, injustice, ethnic divisions, hunger and disease of millions and millions of people.

• 51% of the Nigerian population is illiterate. Statistics about education is quite impressive: 37.5% of male population is illiterate and more than 60% of female population still doesn’t have a standard education.

• Scholar structures of Nigeria are insufficient and inadequate. The rooms, without windows, water, lighting, desks and blackboard, contain over 80 students.

• Teachers don’t have the adequate educational training as their payments are. The consequence is corruption and absenteeism. Besides, educative methods and systems don’t fit with the new social asset (scholar regulation still provide for corporal punishment through the use of the “rod” in Nursery School, Primary School and Secondary School)

The project is an answer to the big request for an education for the new generation from parents, civil and religious authorities. This is a service especially for the children living near the mission (in the crowded and poor neighbourhoods of Show Light, Ugwuagba, Awada, Okpoko and Ibolo-Obosi). We want to offer not only a Technical School but also a basic and secondary education.

The main object of the Project is to restructure the existing structures and to build new ones to offer the UBE education for boys and girls (6-14 years old) and the Secondary School for children (15-17 years old). Then a professional qualification or a Universitary Education.

Our hope for the future is to build an educational-scholar structure with new rooms, new labs and a bigger college.

  • Main objects of the project:
Human, social, spiritual and cultural education for young people that are living difficult situation everyday. Primary and Secondary School.
  • Specific object of the project:
Restructure of the Don Bosco Training Centre.
Construction of the new buildings (rooms, labs and the college).

Project-life: 2007 - 2014

At the end of the project, every year 600 students from 6 to 17 years old will receive an adequate scholar education and then they will be introduced in the world of job or they will start the university.

The cost of the project in the next 7 years is of 700.000,00 €
